Farrow is an NPC in Path of Exile 2 who anchors The Runeseeker questline and introduces the Runes of Aldur league mechanic . Finding him and finishing his quests unlocks the Runeforging crafting ladder. This system lets you add powerful properties to your gear.

Runeforging Unlocks by Act

Runeforging is the core league mechanic in Path of Exile 2's Runes of Aldur expansion. You unlock and upgrade its crafting tiers by completing Farrow's four-part "The Runeseeker" questline across the campaign acts .

Missing any of these side quests means you will completely miss that tier of the system, as the game does not give you a UI reminder.

Runeforging Campaign Progression

Farrow upgrades your crafting abilities as you advance through the main story:

ActQuest LocationUnlocked Mechanic & Reward
Act 1Clearfell & Lost CatacombsVerisium Anvil & Armor Runeforging: Allows you to spend Verisium to craft Runic Ward onto your armor pieces. Sub-55 items get it for free, while high-level armor trades base defense for Ward.
Act 2Remnant EncountersRunic Inscriptions & Alloys: Unlocks 13 Alloy currency types via Remnant encounters. Alloys act like Perfect Essences, removing one random modifier on a rare item and replacing it with a chosen crafted mod.
Act 3Mystic Refuge (Hidden Jungle)Unique Verisium Runeforging: Upgrades the base type of low-level Unique weapons and armor (under level 55). This heavily scales their damage or defenses so they stay strong into endgame maps.
Act 4Plunder's Point Logbook13 Ancient Runes: Unlocks ultimate weapon-type-specific crafting bonuses that provide massive endgame impact for your specific build.

Crucial Unlocking Tips

  • Act 3 is Missable: The Mystic Refuge area is a hidden zone in the Infested Barrens and is not on the main story path. You must manually find the three runic stones in the Jungle Ruins, Venom Crypts, and Azak Bog to open it.
  • Act 4 Requirement: To fully complete the final tier, you must do the optional logbook quest by finding the four map pieces, completing the encounter, and clicking the table inside the building.
  • Account-Wide: You only need to do this progression once. All unlocked Runeforging recipes apply to your entire league account.

What Does Farrow Sell?

Farrow sells one random drop-enabled rune for Verisium at a time.

  • The Currency: He does not take gold. You must pay him using Verisium.
  • The Cost: The price of the rune is not fixed. The cost scales up higher as your character level increases.

Where to Find Farrow

You can find Farrow early in the game in the Clearfell area during Act 1, where you can pick up The Runeseeker side quest from him.

Common Quest Bugs & Fixes

Yes, Farrow's "The Runeseeker" questline is heavily bugged, especially if you experience a crash, disconnect, or character death mid-quest. Because the game does not offer a built-in "reset quest" button, players have had to find specific workarounds to progress their crafting tiers.

Known Bugs and How to Fix Them

  • Farrow Disappears in Act 3 Mystic Refuge: If you summon Farrow in the Mystic Refuge but die, crash, or experience a server reset before talking to him, he will vanish completely. Even resetting the instance will not bring him back, leaving your quest stuck on "Speak to Farrow".
    • The Fix: Travel back to the main Act 3 town. Farrow often gets forced back there by the game's code. Approach him in town and cycle through all his "Gossip" choices. This usually pushes the quest log forward, bypassing the broken zone interaction.
  • Missing "Summon Farrow" Interactivity in Act 2: After gathering the necessary runes and reaching the end of the Skull of the Titan area, the interactive "blinking dot" required to call Farrow may fail to appear.
    • The Fix: Hold Alt while walking around the center platform to see if the click target is hiding behind world geometry. If it still does not show up, open your map, hold Ctrl, and click the Skull of the Titan waypoint to create a brand-new instance of the zone to force a visual reload.
  • Act 4 Quest Log Does Not Update: In Act 4, players often gather all four map pieces but find that talking to Farrow does nothing.
    • The Fix: You are talking to the wrong person. Give the map pieces to Makuru, the ship's captain, instead of Farrow or Dannig. Doing this triggers the correct event and unlocks your final tier of runes.
  • Second Character (Alt) Progression Breaks: If you try to complete the questline on a second or third character, Farrow’s triggers in Act 2 and Act 3 will often break completely, refusing to let you click objects.
    • The Fix: Ignore him entirely on your alts. Runeforging unlocks are account-wide. Your secondary characters automatically have access to all the recipes unlocked by your main character, so you do not need to do the quest a second time.

General Troubleshooting Steps

If Farrow stops responding or an item will not click:

  1. Type /reloadui in your in-game chat window to clear out frozen screen elements.
  2. Check your map to see if Farrow is pointing toward hidden runes. A recent patch updated his campaign behavior to highlight active objects if you get lost.
