At level 10 in World of Warcraft: Forever, visit a Hunter trainer and complete the Taming the Beast chain. You’ll use a quest rod on three specific animals, returning to the trainer between tames. Once you learn the permanent Tame Beast spell, use it on a nearby animal you want to keep. A common boar or bear is a good starting choice for solo leveling.

Where to start the level 10 Hunter pet quest
Go to the trainer for your race. If your current trainer offers The Hunter’s Path, follow it to the trainer who starts the chain. The animals in the right column are the practice targets, in quest order. Match the exact name in your quest log before using the rod.
| Race | Where to start | Practice targets in order |
|---|---|---|
| Human · Alliance | Hunter trainer in Goldshire, Elwynn Forest | Rockhide Boar → Gray Forest Wolf → Young Forest Bear |
| Dwarf · Alliance | Grif Wildheart in Kharanos, Dun Morogh | Large Crag Boar → Snow Leopard → Ice Claw Bear |
| Night Elf · Alliance | Dazalar in Dolanaar, Teldrassil | Webwood Lurker → Nightsaber → Forest Owl |
| Orc or Troll · Horde | Thotar in Razor Hill, Durotar | Dire Mottled Boar → Surf Crawler → Armored Scorpid |
| Tauren · Horde | Yaw Sharpmane in Bloodhoof Village, Mulgore | Adult Plainstrider → Prairie Stalker → Swoop |
| Skyborne · Both factions | Quel’ana Quickgale in Valanaar, Zephras Isle (59.6, 72.6) | Windsong Crawler → Ornery Galestrider → Vuldren Alpha |
📍 Skyborne route: For the first practice tame, look for a Windsong Crawler along the water southwest of Valanaar. Once you turn in the third tame, take Training the Beast and speak to Quel’dora Quickgale nearby.

How to finish Taming the Beast and keep a pet
- Take the first rod and find the exact beast. Clear nearby enemies before you start. Pick a target standing apart from other creatures and begin at full health.
- Target the living animal and use the Taming Rod from your bags. Stand still until the channel finishes. The beast can hit you during the channel, so choose a quiet spot before you start.
- Return the rod to your trainer. Turn in each step before taking the next rod. If the practice beast is still with you, dismiss it before attempting the next tame.
- Complete the chain and check your spellbook. After learning Tame Beast, finish Training the Beast if offered and learn any pet-care skills available from your trainer.
- Tame the pet you want to keep. Use Tame Beast on an eligible animal at or below your own level. Bring food that suits its diet so you can feed it after the tame.
⚑ Easy to miss: The quest rod works on the named practice target. For example, a Dwarf needs a Snow Leopard for the second step. A Juvenile Snow Leopard is a different creature.
What should you tame as your first permanent pet?
Choose something you can reach and tame right after the quest. A boar gives you Charge, which helps it reach the next target quickly. A bear is a sturdy alternative for general questing. Check the animal’s level in game before pulling it, especially in packs where levels vary.
| If you finish near | Look for | Why it’s a practical pick |
|---|---|---|
| Goldshire | Young Forest Bear in Elwynn Forest | You’ve already looked for this creature during the Human quest. |
| Kharanos or Dolanaar | Crag Boar in Dun Morogh or Young Thistle Boar in Teldrassil | Take a nearby boar on your own side of the starting route. |
| Razor Hill or Bloodhoof Village | Mottled Boar in Durotar or Battleboar in Mulgore | Pick the boar in your current zone and get back to questing. |
| Valanaar | Windsong Crawler near water on Zephras Isle | A local option from the first Skyborne quest, handy if you want to tame immediately. |

✓ Before you leave town: Bring food your pet can eat and find Call Pet, Feed Pet and Revive Pet in your spellbook as you unlock them. Save your early gold for abilities and supplies you actually use. For ideas on funding those costs as you level, see the WoW Forever gold farming guide.

WoW Forever Hunter first pet FAQ
Can I tame a pet before level 10 if the beast is level 7?
No. The beast’s level tells you whether it is eligible once you have Tame Beast. You still need to reach level 10 and complete the unlock quest.
Why didn’t my tame count for the quest?
Check the creature’s exact name, confirm you’re on the correct quest step and use its Taming Rod. Try again on an isolated target, with any previous practice pet dismissed and no movement during the channel.
Does the animal I tame for the quest become my permanent pet?
The rod is for the practice quests. Once you learn Tame Beast, use that spell to tame the animal you want as your regular companion.
Do I need a rare pet to level efficiently?
No. Tame an available boar, bear or another local beast you can handle. You can look for a particular pet or ability later when it fits how you play.
Next, plan where to quest with your new companion using the WoW Forever 1–60 leveling route.
