This edition celebrates the game's 20th anniversary and highlights the future of Major League Baseball with young, rising stars. The cover athletes for this year's game are Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates), Gunnar Henderson (Baltimore Orioles), and Elly De La Cruz (Cincinnati Reds).
For the first time ever, a "triple play" of stars represents the cover, signaling a shift toward showcasing multiple athletes to celebrate the new generation of players. These athletes represent the new face of baseball, with each one having a significant impact on the game during the 2024 season.

In addition to the main cover athletes, MLB The Show 25 introduces exciting new features and updates to the gameplay, modes, and visuals. Here's a look at some of the key updates and improvements players can expect.
This year, Road to the Show receives a significant overhaul with the introduction of the "Amateur Years" career path. Players can now experience the journey from High School to College, with real-life licensed teams like LSU and UCLA available for the first time. After finishing college, players enter the MLB Draft Combine. This update also replaces the traditional attribute grinding system with a more RPG-style token and perk system, allowing players to customize their characters in new and creative ways.

Diamond Dynasty sees the biggest change in MLB The Show 25. Sets and Seasons have been removed, making way for a year-long progression system. This change ensures that players can continue to earn rewards and progress without worrying about a reset at the end of the season. Diamond Quest, a new roguelike mode, has been added, which is styled as a board game where players roll dice and complete challenges to unlock cards and rewards.

For players who enjoy competitive solo events, the Weekend Classic offers a high-stakes, periodic solo ranked event where players compete for exclusive multiplayer rewards. This new event is perfect for those who want a challenge and want to earn rewards through their own competitive skills.

In MLB The Show 25, a new card rarity tier, Red Diamond, has been introduced. This new rarity adds even more depth to Diamond Dynasty, and it ties into the newly expanded World Baseball Classic tournament, bringing more international talent into the game.

The Franchise Mode gets a huge update with the revamped Front Office Experience, where the new "Trade HUB" offers better, more realistic trade logic. The updated system includes a new "Battle of the Big Boards" free agency system where GMs have to weigh team reputation and market size against contract offers. This feature brings more depth to how teams can manage their rosters and plan for the future.

Continuing its educational approach, the Negro Leagues Storylines return with Season 3. This season highlights legends like "Cool Papa" Bell and "Bullet" Rogan, adding to the game's educational and historical depth.
One of the standout gameplay improvements is the introduction of Ambush Hitting. This new mechanic allows players to guess the pitch's location for an increased PCI (Plate Coverage Indicator) size, giving them a better chance to hit. Additionally, Bear Down Pitching has been introduced to improve pitcher command and precision.
For players seeking an even higher level of competition, MLB The Show 25 introduces the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) Difficulty. This level is above the Legend difficulty, offering a truly challenging experience for the most seasoned players.
Defensive upgrades are another major focus in MLB The Show 25. Hundreds of new animations have been added, including jaw-dropping catches like robbing home runs and hot shot grabs. Additionally, a first-person fielding camera option gives players a more immersive and detailed view of their fielding experience.
For players who enjoy consistent gameplay, the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system is now available in single-player modes. This system ensures consistent strike zone calls, making the gameplay more predictable and fair.
