MapleStory Classic World Spearman Guide: Spear vs Polearm and Best SP Builds

The Spearman is the final branch of the Warrior lineup and offers a slightly different experience from Fighters and Pages. Instead of using a one-handed weapon and shield, Spearmen rely on two-handed Spears or Polearms. This means you give up the extra defense of a shield, but the class makes up for it with strong reach, useful defensive skills, and excellent grinding potential. Players planning their progression may also want to understand how equipment and MapleStory Classic World Mesos can affect their weapon and gear choices.

This breakdown focuses on the second job, covering levels 30 through 70. The information is based on available beta data, so some values or mechanics may change as the game develops. Even so, the current numbers give a useful picture of how the class performs and how its two weapon paths compare.

Spear and Polearm Mastery Offer Different Benefits

The biggest decision for a Spearman is whether to specialize in Spears or Polearms. Both mastery skills eventually provide level 10 mastery, but their additional benefits are very different.

Spear Mastery provides a 20% critical rate when fully leveled. That sounds extremely powerful at first, especially because Warriors begin with a relatively low critical rate. However, the actual damage increase is smaller than it might appear.

Characters start with 5% critical rate and 20% critical damage, while Precise Strikes can add another 5% critical rate. This means the Polearm route sits around 10% critical rate, while a fully mastered Spear can reach approximately 30%. Since critical damage remains at 20%, the additional critical chance produces only about a 4% expected damage increase.

Polearm Mastery takes a different approach by granting 20 movement speed. This bonus is surprisingly valuable because Warriors have limited access to movement speed from equipment. Shoes and capes provide only a modest amount, meaning the 20 movement speed from mastery can be more valuable than several equipment upgrades.

For players who spend a lot of time grinding, that movement speed can make the Polearm path feel considerably smoother.

Final Attack Adds Damage and Sustain

Final Attack works similarly for both weapon choices. At maximum level, it has a 50% chance to trigger an additional single-target attack dealing 260% damage. It also returns 10% of the damage as HP, with the healing limited to 25% of maximum HP per activation.

This gives the Spearman a useful source of sustain while grinding. Although the raw follow-up damage is slightly below the Page's comparable ability, the built-in HP recovery helps compensate for the difference.

Because Final Attack can be enabled and left running, it also makes the class relatively comfortable for extended grinding sessions.

Booster, Iron Will, and Rush Complete the Toolkit

Weapon Booster improves attack speed and eventually lasts for up to 300 seconds. Once it reaches a high level, maintaining the buff becomes easy and requires little attention.

Iron Will is one of the Spearman's most distinctive defensive skills. At maximum level, it costs 25 MP, provides 50 weapon defense, lasts 300 seconds, and gives a 35% chance to resist knockback. The defense itself reduces incoming damage by roughly 4% to 6%, depending on character level, but the knockback resistance can be even more important.

Staying on a platform while grinding prevents unnecessary interruptions and reduces the time spent repositioning after enemy attacks.

Rush is another important utility skill. At maximum level, it can move the character up to 150 distance while affecting up to four monsters, with a one-second cooldown. It does not depend on the normal weapon multiplier, making it equally effective for Spears and Polearms.

Why Polearms Generally Win the Damage Test

The weapon comparison becomes clearer when looking at their attack multipliers.

Spears use a 1.5 multiplier for swings and 3.5 for stabs. Polearms reverse those values, using 3.5 for swings and 1.5 for stabs. Normal attacks are not evenly distributed: swings occur roughly 60% of the time, while stabs appear about 40% of the time.

Because Polearms place their stronger multiplier on the more common animation, their average multiplier is approximately 2.7 compared with around 2.3 for Spears. That gives Polearms a theoretical advantage of about 17.4%.

Attack speed does reduce the difference somewhat. Most Polearms have a slow attack speed, while some Spears are faster. Even after accounting for attack intervals and weapon attack, however, Polearms generally remain ahead through the second-job progression.

Spear Mastery's extra critical chance narrows the gap, but it does not completely eliminate it.

Weapon Availability Also Favors Polearms

Damage is not the only reason to consider a Polearm. Availability is another major advantage.

Spears and Polearms can both be purchased around the lower level ranges, but several Polearms can also be crafted. Examples include the Janitor's Mop, Axe Polearm, Crescent Polearm, and Nine Dragons.

Spears have far fewer crafting opportunities, making them more dependent on shops and monster drops. A notable low-level option is the level 25 Janitor's Mop, which requires 45 STR but no DEX and provides 50 weapon attack. With the appropriate crafting level, it can be an efficient weapon between levels 25 and 30.

For players who value accessibility and self-sufficiency, Polearms are therefore the more practical choice.

Building Your AP and DEX Correctly

The general Warrior stat rule remains simple: raise DEX only as much as needed for your next weapon and put the remaining AP into STR.

After level 30, the DEX requirement for Spears and Polearms generally follows the character's level. A level 30 weapon needs around 30 DEX, while a level 70 weapon needs around 70 DEX.

However, equipment bonuses can reduce the amount of base DEX you need. There is no reason to rush your base DEX upward if your equipment already supplies some of the requirement. Keeping as much AP as possible in STR will improve your overall damage.

Recommended First Job Skill Progression

First Job provides 61 SP. Precise Strikes should be prioritized because its accuracy bonus reduces the amount of resources needed for accuracy elsewhere and allows more investment into STR.

After that, the best offensive skill depends on your grinding location. Slash Blast performs well against groups of monsters, while Power Strike is better suited to thinner layouts and individual targets.

For a first character, leveling both attack skills is a straightforward option. A small investment into Improved HP Recovery and Max HP Increase is also useful. Iron Body can be skipped because the Spearman cannot use a shield, reducing the practical value of its defense bonus.

Recommended Second Job SP Build

Second Job provides 121 SP. Fully leveling every available skill would require considerably more SP, but choosing one weapon specialization makes the points fit almost perfectly.

A strong final allocation is:

· Mastery: 20 SP

· Final Attack: 30 SP

· Booster: 20 SP

· Iron Will: 30 SP

· Rush: 20 SP

That totals 120 SP, leaving one point unused.

For the Polearm path, start with one point in Rush for mobility. Put enough points into Polearm Mastery to unlock Booster, then place one point each into Booster and Iron Will. From there, focus on maximizing Polearm Mastery, so you receive the movement speed benefit as quickly as possible.

The Spear route follows the same general order, with Spear Mastery prioritized because its critical-rate bonus improves gradually as the skill levels.

What Playing a Spearman Feels Like

The Spearman is particularly comfortable for players who enjoy steady grinding rather than constantly managing abilities. Booster and Iron Will both last up to 300 seconds, allowing them to be activated together.

Final Attack is another low-maintenance skill. Once enabled, it continues to provide additional damage and HP recovery automatically.

A typical combat cycle involves activating your buffs, using Rush to enter a group, then using Power Strike or Slash Blast depending on the situation. The long melee reach of Spears and Polearms also makes it possible to attack monsters from useful platform positions.

Which Players Should Choose Spearman?

The Spearman is a strong choice for players who want a durable melee character with good mobility and simple buff management. Its long attack range, knockback resistance, HP recovery, and weapon choices make it comfortable for extended grinding.

Between the two weapons, Polearms are the stronger general recommendation. They offer better average weapon multipliers, useful movement speed through mastery, and more accessible crafting options.

Spears remain perfectly playable, especially for players who enjoy their critical-focused style or happen to obtain a particularly strong weapon. The difference is not large enough to make Spears unusable, particularly once later-job skills become more important.

Overall, the Polearm route is the most efficient second-job option for most players. Max your primary weapon mastery, complete your core Warrior skills, keep DEX under control, and invest as much remaining AP as possible into STR. With this approach, the Spearman can provide a smooth and reliable leveling experience from the early game into the later stages.

When upgrading weapons, armor, and other equipment, having enough MSCW Mesos can also make progression more convenient. Smart stat allocation and careful gear upgrades will help you get the most out of your Spearman without wasting valuable resources.
