The legendary MMORPG franchise is making its return. At Summer Game Fest 2026, publisher and developer NCSoft officially dropped the launch reveal trailer for AION 2, locking in its highly anticipated global release date.

Following its successful initial rollout in Korea and Taiwan late last year, the next-generation MMORPG is finally heading west.

The Big Announcement: Release Date and Platforms

AION 2 is scheduled to launch worldwide in September 2026.

Unlike many recent NCSoft titles, the global version of AION 2 is launching as a PC-exclusive experience. Players will be able to access the game through Steam and NCSoft's proprietary PC platform, Purple. Regional servers will be deployed across North America, South America, Europe, and Asia, supporting ten languages at launch, including English, German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Key Features Revealed at SGF 2026

The Summer Game Fest trailer showcased a deep dive into how Unreal Engine 5 has transformed the world of Atreia. The sequel takes place 200 years after the events of the original game.

Aerial Combat and Verticality

Flight is no longer just a method of travel—it is the core combat mechanic. AION 2 features a world 36 times larger than the original game, built specifically around 3D verticality. Players fight, position, and execute skill chains while soaring through the skies, making altitude a major tactical advantage.

Massive PvE and PvP Content

The game launches with a massive amount of content designed for both solo and group players:

  • Over 200 Dungeons: Spanning solo challenges, 4-player party instances, and 8-player group raids.
  • Diverse PvP: Dedicated PvP modes including 1v1, 4v4, and 8v8 arenas, alongside the return of world "rifting" and large-scale faction warfare in the Abyss.
  • Launch Classes: 8 playable classes will be available from day one, including the newly revealed Monk class.
  • Economy and Customization: Full player-to-player trading, an auction house, a deep crafting system, and an advanced character creator with over 200 customization options.

PC System Requirements

NCSoft has released the official PC specifications for the global client. Given the shift to Unreal Engine 5, an SSD is highly recommended for optimal performance.

The Kinah Currency Economy

As with the original game, Kinah serves as the primary, lifeblood currency of the AION 2 ecosystem. Nearly every aspect of character progression, gear enhancement, and market interaction revolves around accumulating and spending it.

Core Functions of Kinah

Kinah acts as the main economic sink in the game. Players will continuously spend it on:

  • Gear Progression: Upgrading equipment tiers, slotting mana stones, and funding high-level enchantment attempts.
  • The World Market: Trading gear, rare drops, and crafting materials directly with other players on the cross-server Auction House.
  • Crafting & Consumables: Purchasing base materials from NPCs and stocking up on mandatory combat supplies like flight scrolls, potions, and food buffs.

The Kinah-Quna Exchange System

AION 2 features a dual-currency structure composed of Kinah (the active in-game gold) and Quna (the premium shop currency). To keep the economy healthy, NCSoft implements a player-driven exchange system via the marketplace.

Free-to-play players can farm Kinah through dungeons, daily tasks, and spacetime rifts, then list their Kinah on the market to buy Quna from other players. Conversely, players looking to skip the grind can trade premium Quna for in-game Kinah.

Marketplace Note: Based on the current version live in Eastern regions, accessing the player-to-player currency exchange and the Auction House requires an active premium subscription pass (roughly $12/month). This restriction acts as a barrier against automated bot networks inflating the economy.

Global Monetization Adjustments

One of the biggest talking points among MMO communities following the SGF announcement is how NCSoft will handle monetization in the West.

The eastern launch faced criticism regarding heavy pay-to-win elements and aggressive power creep. For the September global release, NCSoft has stated they are actively adjusting the monetization model to better fit Western audiences. Early community reports indicate a shift toward a cleaner setup, utilizing a single premium subscription pass alongside fairer, equalized PvP modes where player skill overrides wallet size.

Players can currently add AION 2 to their wishlists on Steam ahead of the September 2026 launch.
