The development of Aion 2 has been a long and transformative journey for NCSoft, spanning nearly a decade. From its initial announcement to its eventual regional release, the game has undergone significant changes, both in terms of its gameplay and technology.

When Did Aion 2 Start Development?

1. Initial Announcement (2018)

The first official confirmation of Aion 2 came in 2018. During the "Director's Cut" showcase in November that year, NCSoft introduced the game to the world. Initially, it was announced as a mobile-first sequel to the popular Aion franchise. The story was set 900 years before the original, in a world where the Elyos and Asmodians had not yet split, and the two factions were still united in their battle against common threats.

2. Strategic Pivot & Engine Upgrade (2020–2023)

As time passed, NCSoft realized the growing demand for high-quality cross-platform games that could deliver a more expansive experience. This led to a major pivot in the game's design:

  • Engine Shift: In 2020, Aion 2 switched to Unreal Engine 5, offering cutting-edge graphics that could compete with the best next-gen titles. The engine upgrade allowed the game to feature a massive open world with seamless transitions between environments, providing an immersive experience like never before.
  • Platform Change: What began as a mobile-only project soon evolved into a multi-platform game. NCSoft decided to expand Aion 2 to include PC, ensuring that it would appeal to both mobile and PC gamers alike. This decision reflected the growing trend of cross-platform play in the gaming industry, as well as the studio's desire to compete with global AAA games.

3. Scaling Production (2024–2025)

By 2024, Aion 2 became NCSoft's primary focus, especially after the mixed reception of Throne and Liberty, another major project from the company. The game underwent a significant scaling-up phase:

  • Massive Team: NCSoft expanded the development team to over 300 people, making Aion 2 one of the largest active projects in the company's history. This allowed for more specialized departments, including world-building, art design, and quality assurance.
  • Global Focus: The developers made a conscious effort to design Aion 2 for a global audience. They shifted away from some of the traditional mobile auto-play mechanics and instead focused on action-oriented combat, aiming to create a game that would appeal to hardcore MMO fans and casual gamers alike.

4. Regional Launch (November 2025)

After seven years of development, Aion 2 officially launched in South Korea and Taiwan on November 19, 2025. This regional release was a key milestone, serving as the final test for the game's mechanics, systems, and infrastructure before expanding to other regions. The launch in South Korea and Taiwan was met with significant interest, and NCSoft used the feedback to refine and adjust the game ahead of its global release.

The regional launch in South Korea and Taiwan not only marked a key milestone for Aion 2 but also provided crucial feedback on the game's economy, especially in how Aion 2 Kinah is earned and spent. NCSoft used this feedback to refine the in-game economy, ensuring a smoother and more rewarding experience. As the game prepares for its global release, these adjustments will help create a balanced and engaging economic system for players worldwide.

5. Global Road Map (2026 Q3)

The success of the regional launch set the stage for Aion 2's global rollout. NCSoft's focus shifted to localization and optimization for a worldwide release. The global version of the game is scheduled to arrive in Q3 of 2026, with a launch on Steam and NCSoft's own Purple platform. This release will introduce Aion 2 to a wider audience, marking the next big step in its evolution.
