To complete the Nightmare Nemeses challenge in Path of Exile, you must finish four of the five specific Nightmare maps with at least 175% Item Quantity. These maps represent enhanced, high-difficulty endgame content featuring "Nightmare" versions of major bosses.

Nightmare Nemeses(4)

Complete any four of the following Nightmare Maps while they have at least 175% Item Quantity.

  • Abomination Map. Boss: Nightmare of the Depraved Trinity - This boss is an uber version of The Depraved Trinity.
  • Citadel Map. Boss: Nightmare of Uhtred - This boss is an uber version of Uhtred, Covetous Traitor.
  • Fortress Map. Boss: Nightmare of the Unbreakable - This boss is an uber version of The Unbreakable.
  • Sanctuary Map. Boss: Nightmare of Lycia - This boss is an uber version of Lycia, Herald of the Scourge. She will also summon a miniboss based on Beidat, Archangel of Death (Nightmare of Beidat) to assist her during the fight.
  • Ziggurat Map. Boss: Nightmare of Catarina - This boss is an uber version of Catarina, Master of Undeath. At every 25% life lost, she will summon minibosses based on Kurgal, Ulaman, and Amanamu. Catarina will be invincible until the Abyssal Lich boss is defeated.

Challenge Requirements

Nightmare Maps are enhanced Tier 16 maps that lead to encounters with "Nightmare" versions of certain bosses.

  • Objective: Complete 4 out of 5 Nightmare Maps.
  • Quantity Threshold: Each map must have at least 175% Item Quantity.
  • High-Tier Versions: For certain related achievements, players often aim for 250% Item Quantity on T17 versions by rolling high-quant maps and using Eldritch Altars to boost the total.

How to Reach 175% Item Quantity

Reaching this threshold requires heavy "juicing" and specific Atlas Passives:

1. Map Quality: Use Chisels to hit 20% quality.

2. Explicit Modifiers

Use an Orb of Alchemy and Chaos Orbs to roll high-value modifiers. Higher-tier maps inherently have larger quantity bonuses from their dangerous mods.

3. Atlas Passives

Allocate nodes that increase the Effect of Explicit Modifiers on your maps (e.g., Multiplying Modifiers, Map Modifier Effect). This is the most consistent way to push a ~110% quantity map over the 175% mark.

4. Map Device

Use the 8% Item Quantity crafting option if available, though this counts toward the total quantity within the map instance.

5. Scarabs

Certain Scarabs, such as Risk Scarabs, can further boost the difficulty and quantity of the map.

Completion Tips

Completing these maps can be difficult due to lethal modifiers. Community members on Reddit have shared several "cheats" to make the challenge easier:

  • Modifier Removal: You can use a combination of Scarab of the Sinistral (increases prefix mods but disables suffixes) and Scarab of the Dextral (increases suffix mods but disables prefixes). When used together, they effectively disable both prefixes and suffixes on the map, making the boss much easier to handle while still counting for completion.
  • Atlas Tree Support: Run these maps with a blank atlas tree or one specialized in defensive buffs like Shrines or Niko's physical/speed buffs from Sulphite nodes to increase your survivability.
  • Reaching the Threshold: To hit the 175% (or 250% for T17s) quantity mark, use Atziri Fragments (5% quantity each) and invest in Map Modifier Effect nodes on your Atlas passive tree.
