The 3.28 Mirage update introduces some of the most significant overhauls to the Path of Exile endgame in years, focusing on a major Atlas redesign, the removal of tedious "busywork" mechanics, and new ways to "juice" maps.
Endgame Changes 3.28
- Extensive changes have been made to the Atlas and how you engage with Maps, without interfering with the beloved core experience. Some of the more frustrating aspects have also been streamlined or removed.
- Map items are no longer associated with a specific Map Area. As an example, instead of having a Tier 10 Mesa Map, you will now find a Tier 10 Map. To open a Mesa Map, you now locate and select Mesa on your Atlas, put in your Map item, and activate the Map Device.
- That Mesa Map may drop a Tier 11 Map. You can then place this into your Map Device, which defaults to the last Map run, and either run Mesa again or choose a new Map Area to use it on.
- The structure of the Atlas has also changed, you now begin your exploration at the centre of the Atlas, with each corner housing one of four Voidstone slots.
- All content accessed using the Map Device is now physically present on the Atlas, allowing you to see everything available in the Endgame as you reveal the fog of war.
- All Unique Maps are now present on the Atlas, including some old favourites that are appearing for the first time.
- You now gain 1 Atlas Skill Point per Unique Map completed on your Atlas, up to a maximum of 10. There are around 20 Unique Maps available, so you only need to complete the half you want (not looking at you, Hall of Grandmasters).
- The remaining Atlas Skill Points have been moved to other places, and you can now get more total Atlas Skill Points than before.
- Eagon now has a new goal and is determined to stop Zana traversing the threads that weave the Atlas together and severing them. He has made use of a new mysterious discovery, Arcane Astrolabes, but by using them to trace her movement they cause dangerous side effects.
- Using an Astrolabe on a Map on the Atlas manifests a Shaped Region in that quadrant of the Atlas, affecting many of the Maps within it. There are many types of Astrolabes, and they apply different types of Shaped Regions.
- Completing the content added by the Astrolabe will remove the Shaped Region's influence from that Map. Upon doing so, every other Map remaining in the Shaped Region will gain an additional modifier.
- Once you have successfully rid the Atlas of the Shaped Region, Eagon will take you to one of the four Memory Vaults, where there are powerful rewards to be had.
- Each Vault is associated with a specific quadrant on the Atlas, so you're able to target a certain vault if you're wanting to try to get a specific type of reward.
- Interacting with the Map Device now opens the Atlas screen. Clicking locations on the Atlas will allow you to use a Map (and any fragments) to open portals to that specific location.
- Certain locations will require special map items to access, such as Unique Maps, Shaper Guardian Maps, Nightmare Maps, Vaal Temple and locations requiring Map Fragments rather than Map Items.
- As you can now run any Map with a Map Item, the Favoured Map system has been removed.
- Memory Skills have been removed from Originator Influenced areas. You can still collect Petals in these areas, which now instead grant a higher chance to find items with Memory Strands.
- Several of the effects from the removed Memory Skills have been moved to new bonus modifiers on Altars at the end of Maps within Memory Threads. For example, Killing a Rare Monster consumes 30 Petals if possible to revive the Monster once.
- The Decayed Voidstone is now obtained from killing both the Shaper and the Elder. It can also still be obtained from defeating Uber Elder.
- You now receive a Voidstone from killing both the Searing Exarch and the Eater of Worlds (instead of one from each).
- The extra Voidstone that this leaves is now obtained from killing the Incarnation of Dread.
- Introduced the Memory of Loneliness, which adds a Memory Thread to a quadrant of the Atlas leading to the Incarnation of Neglect.
- Introduced the Memory of Trauma, which adds a Memory Thread to a quadrant of the Atlas leading to the Incarnation of Fear.
- Introduced the Memory of Reverence, which adds a Memory Thread to a quadrant of the Atlas leading to the Incarnation of Dread.
- The Threads of the Originator Quest line now awards a skill book granting 2 Atlas Passive Skill Points and 2 Atlas Passive Respec Points for defeating each Incarnation boss.
- Tier 17 Maps have undergone significant changes, and are now Nightmare Maps.
- Completing each Nightmare Map now awards 1 Atlas Skill Points (5 total).
- Slightly increased the reward values of Originator-influenced and Nightmare Map modifiers that granted Increased Pack Size or Item Rarity.
- Slightly reduced the reward values of Originator-influenced and Nightmare Map modifiers that granted More Currency, Maps or Scarabs.
- After obtaining the Voidstone from killing the Incarnation of Dread, items with Memory Strands will now be able to drop from all maps ran on the atlas. More Memory Strand affected items will still come from Originator maps, to retain them being the best source.
- Items that drop with Memory Strands will now more often be higher tier bases.
- Items that drop with Memory Strands will have more Memory Strands on average.

- Atlas Bonus Objectives now additionally grant +1% to Map Item Quantity for every 4 Bonus Objectives completed.
- Uber Bosses now only require 4 Fragments to access (previously 5).
- All Maven Invitations are now accessed through Kirac, rather than some of them being quest items you place into your Map Device.
- Sacrifice and Mortal Fragments can no longer be used in a Map Device to open a random Vaal Side Area directly. Instead, they can be used alongside Maps to add a Vaal Side Area to the opened Map, while still applying their current Map Item Quantity bonus.
- Sacrifice and Mortal Fragments now explicitly state the Map Item Quantity bonus they apply to areas.
- Elder Guardian, Shaper Guardian and Conqueror Maps always generate on Tier 16 Maps. As a result, Divination Cards for these items no longer explicitly state the Map Tier.

- Kirac no longer offers Atlas Missions, and defeating Map Bossess no longer has a chance to grant Kirac Missions. - The Side Quest Divination Card has been temporarily disabled, and existing copies of this card cannot be traded in.
- Kirac's Shop now sells a wider variety of Map related items, and his shop can be rerolled with Gold. Maps within Kirac's Shop generally sell for Gold, although some special items may still sell for Chaos Orbs or Orbs of Chance.
