Desecrated armour is one of the more intriguing crafting options in Path of Exile 2. It allows rare armour pieces to gain unique “desecrated modifiers” that sometimes can't be obtained through normal crafting. To start, you'll need special currency items dropped from Abyss encounters: Gnawed Rib, Preserved Rib, and Ancient Rib.

These rib currencies are tiered by drop level, meaning the higher-level versions appear later in progression:

How Desecration Works

Using one of these rib currencies adds a desecrated modifier slot to your rare armour. Here's what makes them unique:

• Hidden Until Revealed: Desecrated modifiers take up a prefix or suffix slot even when unrevealed.
• Revealing Modifiers: In Act 2, the Well of Souls allows you to reveal the desecrated modifier. When revealed, you'll be given a choice of one of three options.
• Modifier Variety: Many are standard affixes, but in the endgame, desecration can offer exclusive mods not normally possible.
• Slot-Specific: If the rib rolled as a prefix, only prefix options will be offered; same for suffixes.

Crafting Strategy

1. Farm Abyss Encounters: This is where ribs drop. Early on you'll find Gnawed Ribs, and later, Preserved and Ancient Ribs.
2. Save Higher-Tier Ribs: Preserved and Ancient versions are better for high-level armour bases, as they can pull from a wider modifier pool.
3. Use on Valuable Bases: Apply ribs to armour pieces with strong natural stats (e.g., life or resistances) before gambling on the desecrated mod.
4. Reveal at the Well of Souls: Always check your options—sometimes the desecrated pool gives you an endgame-defining affix.

Why Desecration Matters

Desecrated armour adds an extra layer of crafting depth in Path of Exile 2. While you may not always hit the jackpot, the chance to access affixes that can't normally appear makes ribs extremely valuable, especially for endgame armour optimization.
