In MLB The Show 26, the new Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System allows players to appeal an umpire's ball or strike call during games, mirroring the technology officially introduced in Major League Baseball for the 2026 season.

How the ABS Challenge System Works

This system provides a middle ground between traditional umpiring and full automation. While human umpires still call the majority of the game, players can now appeal critical ball or strike calls to a "robot umpire" for an immediate ruling.

  • Challenge Allotment: Each team begins the game with two challenges. If a challenge is successful, the team retains it for later use.
  • Retaining Challenges: If a challenge is successful and the call is overturned, the team retains that challenge to use again later.
  • Who Can Challenge: Challenges must be initiated immediately by the pitcher, catcher, or batter. In-game, this is signified by the player tapping their head or helmet.
  • How to Trigger: Challenges must be initiated immediately after the call by the pitcher, catcher, or batter. In-game, this is performed by the player tapping their head or helmet.
  • Real-Time Feedback: Once triggered, a graphic is displayed on the scoreboard and broadcast showing the exact pitch location relative to a height-adjusted 2D strike zone (set at 27% to 53.5% of the batter's height).
  • Extra Innings: Teams receive one additional challenge per extra inning if they have none remaining.
  • Technology: The system uses a height-adjusted strike zone for every batter, set at 27% of their height for the bottom and 53.5% for the top.

Mode Availability and Gameplay Impact

  • Offline Exclusive: The ABS system is available in offline modes only, such as Franchise and Road to the Show. It is not included in online or competitive modes like Diamond Dynasty to maintain technical stability and prevent desync issues.
  • Strategic Layer: The system adds a new "soft skill" to the game. Players must decide whether to burn a challenge on a borderline call in the early innings or save it for a potential bases-loaded full count later in the game.
  • Statistical Realism: Following MLB's real-world testing, the system is expected to slightly reduce strikeout rates and increase walk rates as more borderline pitches are accurately called.

Since the ABS system is currently limited to offline modes, many players are shifting their focus to Diamond Dynasty to get their competitive fix.
