Why is MLB The Show 26 Not on Game Pass?

For the second consecutive year, Xbox players have noticed a significant absence in their subscription library: MLB The Show 26. After a four-year run where the franchise was a "Day One" staple on Xbox Game Pass, the latest entry has launched as a standalone purchase only.

While the developers at Sony San Diego Studio and the team at Microsoft haven't detailed the exact financials behind this decision, the shift follows a pattern that began with last year's release. Here is a breakdown of why the game is no longer included in the service.

Why is MLB The Show 26 Not on Game Pass

The End of a Specific Distribution Deal

From 2021 to 2024, the presence of MLB The Show on Game Pass was the result of a unique arrangement. Though the game is developed by a Sony-owned studio, Major League Baseball (MLB) itself acts as the publisher for the Xbox and Nintendo versions.

Industry analysis suggests that the initial deal was designed by the MLB to jumpstart the game's presence on Xbox after decades of PlayStation exclusivity. Now that the franchise has established a consistent player base on the platform, the "incentive" period provided by the MLB and Microsoft partnership appears to have concluded.

A Return to Traditional Publishing

Because MLB The Show is first-party Sony software, its inclusion on a rival subscription service was always an industry anomaly. With the expiration of the original Game Pass contract, the series has returned to a more traditional publishing model.

For Sony, moving away from Game Pass allows them to capture the full $69.99 (Standard Edition) or $99.99 (Digital Deluxe) revenue from each Xbox sale. Given that the series consistently tops sales charts regardless of its subscription status, the financial benefit of direct sales likely outweighs the flat licensing fee Microsoft would pay for Game Pass inclusion.

Shift in Player Engagement Strategy

Subscription services are often used to build an audience. After four years of "free" access, most Xbox players who are interested in baseball are already familiar with the franchise.

  • Established Audience: There is less need for the "free trial" hook that Game Pass provides.
  • Microtransactions: A significant portion of the game's revenue comes from "Stubs" in the Diamond Dynasty mode. Since dedicated players often migrate to the newest version for updated rosters and seasonal content, the developers likely believe these "die-hard" fans will buy the game regardless of its inclusion in a service.

What This Means for Players

As of the March 17, 2026 launch, MLB The Show 26 is available as a standard retail purchase on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

While it is possible the game could be added to Game Pass later in the year—perhaps after the All-Star break or during the postseason—there has been no official word suggesting this will happen. For now, those looking to play on launch day will need to purchase the game through the Xbox Store.
